Coding Camp

Inspired by Code.org, Minnetonka Public Schools will implement a K-5 coding curriculum, Tonka, starting in the 2014-15 school year that introduces all students to the language of computer programming, while simultaneously offering and developing advanced level coursework for those students wishing to specialize in this area. This program is the first of its kind in the state of Minnesota.

As the demand for computer programming skills continues to increase in the workplace, there are few opportunities for students to learn these skills in public schools across the country. Computer programming skills have become essential to the success of our students. Not because they will all program computers, but because our students need to understand the science behind the digital devices that are such an important part of our modern world. They need to create technology, not just consume it.

This summer students participated in a summer coding camp. They explored many of the tools embedded in the new curriculum. The camp resulted in students ready to make their own path through the technology they use.
